my underling
Partly out of laziness and partly out of superstition, I’ve yet to write about my new coworker, Leslie. You might remember me whining about the interview process a while back; well, as of June 5th, that phase officially ended and the training phase officially began. So far, so good.
Leslie got her degree in graphic design from a small college in Erie, Pennsylvania in 2006. In fact, that’s where she grew up, and where all of her (and her husband’s) family lives. Quite boldly, Leslie and Mike packed everything they owned in a U-Haul and drove across the US to take up residence in the greater Portland area (Milwaukee, if you want specifics). Wait, didn’t Eric and I do something very similar before college? But I digress…
I like Leslie quite a bit. She has a bubbly, happy personality and is very eager to learn new things. This is good, because there are plenty for me to teach. She’s very careful to catch many of her own mistakes, and she’s not discouraged by those that others point out. Furthermore, Leslie is a hard-worker, and I trust her to work efficiently and independently while I’m attending to my other duties. More personally, I feel we get along pretty well – we are about the same age, have found commonalities between us, and I enjoy talking to her on a daily basis. I was glad she returned the 2nd day, and again the 2nd week.
The first big test is during the latter part of this week as I’m leaving town for the 4th of July and she will be left to hold the fort down by herself. Of course, there’ll be something I forget to tell her that comes up, but I’m hoping she steps up to the challenge. Leslie’s self-confidence when it comes to deciphering something new is lacking yet, but this is to be expected when she’s still learning process and procedure and to really fill the shoes we want her to, her intuition and problem-solving skills will need to develop and blossom.
